Tom Poynton and Tom Knight both hit half centuries as Derbyshire Second XI beat Surrey at Chesterfield to secure their place in the One-Day Trophy final.

Tom Milnes (3-39), who is on-loan from Warwickshire, claimed three wickets and run out, while Tom Taylor (2-38) picked two scalps, to help dismiss Surrey for 241 off the final ball of their innings.

Wes Durston got Derbyshire off to a flyer in reply hitting 46 off 32, before a 100-run stand between Knight (56 not out) and Poynton (58) saw their side to the finish line with five wickets and 30 balls remaining.

The Second XI One-Day Trophy will take place on Thursday 27 August, venue to be confirmed.

After electing to bowl first, Taylor struck twice early on for Derbyshire as he removed opening batsman Olly Batchelor and Captain Vikram Solanki in successive balls to reduce Surrey to 16-2.

Will Davis trapped Aneesh Kapil lbw for 14 and Tom Milnes removed Dominic Sibley for 30 before Chris Green and Bradley Erasmus guided the visitors to 120-4 prior to a slight rain delay.

The slight break in play worked wonders for Derbyshire as shortly after play resumed, Greg Cork ended a partnership of 76 by having Erasmus caught by Taylor for 27.

Milnes then dismissed Dan Douthwaite and Ollie Pope in consecutive deliveries prior to Rob Hemmings having Freddie Van Den Bergh caught behind by Tom Poynton to leave Surrey 182-8.

Green reached his century as he put a ninth-wicket stand of 56 with Tim Linley, before both Green (101) and number eleven Matt Dunn were run out in the final over as Surrey were all out for 241.

Wes Durston got the Derbyshire chase off to a blistering start as, alongside George Sellers, he guided his side to 62 without loss off the first ten overs. Kapil bowled Durston shortly after, with the batsman hitting 46 from 32 balls, with the Derbyshire total on 72-1.

Sellers was caught by Dunn of the bowling of Van Den Bergh for 41, while Scott Elstone was stumped off Erasmus at the other end to leave Derbyshire 124-3.

Tom Poynton and Tom Knight put on a fourth-wicket partnership of 100 to guide Derbyshire to brink of the final, with Poynton bowled by Dunn for 58 with just 18 runs required for victory.

Knight subsequently reached his own half-century and was at the crease at the end to ensure Derbyshire reached their victory target with five overs to spare to seal a place in the final.
