VIDEO: Smit wants Derbyshire to build momentum

Daryn Smit says Derbyshire can take positives from the Royal London One-Day Cup campaign but need to build momentum as they return to first-class cricket versus Worcestershire tomorrow.

Following a block of eight Royal London One-Day Cup games, Derbyshire take on Worcestershire in the Specsavers County Championship at The 3aaa County Ground; starting Friday 19 May at 11am.

Smit said: “We need to look back at what we did well in the first two four day games at the beginning of the season and also look back at what we didn’t do well.

“There are big improvements and positives to take from the defeats but of course, they haven’t resulted in victories for us so to get our first win and kickstart our season in this competition would be great.

“There is lots to play for and a long way to go in the competition so a win would go a long way to get us on a bit of a run and get some momentum going.”

Smit, who kept wicket in Gary Wilson’s absence during the final five Royal London One-Day Cup matches, will keep the gloves for the Specsavers County Championship clash as Gary Wilson remains on international duty with Ireland.

“It was great to have the gloves back again,” said Smit. “It went really well and it was nice to make a positive contribution from behind the stumps to the team.”

He added: “We’re obviously disappointed not to make the Royal London One-Day Cup play offs, but if were honest with ourselves we didn’t play well enough throughout the competition consistently to deserve a place in the play offs.

“There’s been a lot of improvement in certain areas and performances in particular both individually and as a team.”
