A strong Derbyshire Second XI claimed victory in a Twenty20 fixture against Leicestershire at Grace Road on Friday.

In the first of two fixtures, Derbyshire fielded a side containing a host of senior players as they prepare for the new NatWest T20 Blast competition, beginning on Friday 15 May.

Derbyshire claimed a comprehensive 58-run victory, with Wayne Madsen top scoring with 56 and all-rounder Alex Hughes adding a brisk 49 not out at the end.

Having been put into bat, Derbyshire scored 158-4 thanks largely to a 67-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Madsen and Alex Hughes. Madsen hit 56 from 59 balls, including six fours, before falling lbw, but Alex Hughes continued to bat well and, with help from Scott Elstone (10 from six balls), took his side to 158-4 having scored 49 from just 27 balls, with three fours and two sixes.

There were a number of impressive bowling figures as Derbyshire defended their total to claim victory. There were two wickets apiece for Chesney Hughes (2-9), David Wainwright (2-13) and Shiv Thakor (2-30).

Greg Cork (1-8), Alex Hughes (1-17) and a Madsen run out accounted for the other three wickets as Leicestershire finished their 20 overs on 100-9 to hand Derbyshire a 58-run win.

For the second game, Derbyshire made a number of changes to give the full squad some Twenty20 experience. They were, however, not as successful, going down by eight wickets despite scores from Cork (33) and Academy batsman Tom Wood (24).

Tom Knight (2-14) took the two Leicestershire wickets but Tom Wells (44) and Lewis Hill (39 not out) helped the home side reach their victory target inside 16 overs.
