Despite his young age and still a member of the Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby, Matt Critchley burst into the first XI in 2015.
He made his first-team debut in May that year in the County Championship fixture away at Glamorgan, before starring in the draw against Northamptonshire a week later at Derby.
The then 18-year-old hit his maiden century in only his second first-class fixture, despite being picked in the side as a leg-spinner, hitting an unbeaten 137 off 179 balls including 16 fours and two sixes. His efforts in his debut season earned him his first professional.
His talents were not only spotted by Derbyshire as he was selected for an overseas placement as part of the ECB’s men’s International Pathway set up in 2016/17, then again in 2017/18 – both times traveling to Australia.
In 2017, Critchley secured his place at the top of the Twenty20 batting line-up, scoring 245 runs at an average of 28 with a top score of 72 not out, as Derbyshire reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2005.
He then ended the 2017 season back in the four-day side, hitting 266 runs in five matches at an average of 38, including his second first-class century, 102, against Durham at Chesterfield.
Before the 2017, he signed a new four-year deal with the Club to keep him at Derbyshire until end of 2020 season.
