Stephen Stubbings says it’s a dream come true to be back involved at Derbyshire as First XI Support Coach.

Stubbings, an ECB Level 4 Coach, will support Club Captain, Billy Godleman, and provide coaching support to the First XI next summer.

The 38-year-old returns to The 3aaa County Ground with experience of several coaching roles in the professional game, including most recently the position of Batting Coach at reigning NatWest T20 Blast champions, Northamptonshire.

Stubbings said: “It’s great to be back. I have basically spent the majority of my adult life involved with Derbyshire, so to be back as a coach involved with the first team is certainly a dream come true.

“As the First XI Support Coach in a supporting role, the supporting aspect is in recognition of the fact that Billy Godleman, as Captain, basically has the last say in decisions on and off the field.

“I think its a role that quite prevalent traditionally but recently, I suppose, with the directors of cricket and different coaching models its got away from the Captain a little bit. So I think to make things function simply, Billy’s got the overall say in things.

“We obviously have got some pretty big challenges in front of us, but all I see, having been away for a couple of years, is a very hungry squad with some excellent senior players with some really good numbers behind them.

“The young guys have got a lot of ability and I have had the great pleasure to work with six or seven of them through the academy over the last few years so its great to be involved with them again.

“But at the moment I’m just getting a feel for things at the moment and reacquainting myself with a lot of the squad that I know and some of the new guys as well.

“It’s a good time actually training isn’t so heavy. We don’t want to overcook ourselves in November, we have got three or four months of a long pre-season to come and the majority of its going to be indoors so you don’t want to get cabin fever too early.

“But the guys have got structured fitness programmes that they are following at the moment with plenty of good opportunities to get together and work hard.

He concluded: “Derbyshire is somewhere very close to my heart. The cricket side has been a massive part of my life and obviously what goes with that is the connection with the supporters and also the passion I have for the Club itself. If that can bring itself out in a positive way then I am happy.”
