Derbyshire overseas leg-spinner Imran Tahir says it’s very special to be ranked as the number one bowler by the ICC in both Twenty20 and One Day International cricket.

Tahir surged to the top of the ODI rankings after South Africa’s 5-0 series win over Sri Lanka where the 37-year-old contributed 10 wickets across the games and claimed best bowling figures of 3-26.

He said: “When I started cricket I never thought I’d be number one bowler, it’s all the hard work I’ve done, there are a lot of good players in world cricket and coming top of that is a really good achievement and I’m really grateful.

“It’s an absolute honour playing for South Africa, the boys have helped me over the years and made me the bowler I am today. Credit goes to them as well. I’ll try and stay in the spot as long as I can but there are some other brilliant cricketers.

South African ODI Captain, AB de Villiers said: “He doesn’t bowl bad balls anymore, he always used to take wickets but now you don’t see bad balls, which makes him really difficult to play.”

Tahir is due to arrive at Derbyshire in June after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy and will be available for all forms for the remainder of the season.
