After a decade at Derbyshire, batsman Wayne Madsen still gets excited by pre-season preparations and what will be a new challenge for him in 2019.

The 35-year-old was Derbyshire’s leading run-scorer in four-day cricket last summer, with 1,016 runs at an average of 38 and a top-score of 144.

He has also been prolific in white ball cricket in recent years, culminating in a first foray into an overseas T20 tournament – the Pakistan Super League which gets underway in February.

Madsen said: “It’s nice to get back into it. The last couple of months have been about getting fitness levels up and getting strong for the competitions to come.

“To pick up a bat again has been pretty exciting.

“You want to have a bit of a break after a long season, but now is the time to get into gear.

“I get really excited in the build-up, but this year my preparations are a little bit different with the Pakistan Super League coming up.

“It’s always exciting as we get closer to getting outside and challenging each other in the nets.”
