Wicketkeeper-batsman Daryn Smit is looking forward to building on the platform created in 2017 after signing a one-year contract extension.

The 33-year-old, who has committed to Derbyshire until the end of the 2019 season, hit 548 runs across all forms in his debut season for the Club.

He said: “I really appreciate the opportunity to extend my contract. I’m really happy here and I’ve got that first season in county cricket under my belt so I know what to work on going forward.

“I always strive for better and there are a lot of positives to take out from this season and a good platform to build on.

“As a team, we want to be challenging for silverware. We have all the qualities to do that, it’s just about building on the positives and going one better in years to come.”

A versatile player, who also claimed 30 catches and three stumpings with the gloves, Smit praised a positive squad who have shared common goals in striving for success this season.

He added: “It’s been an easy transition. The guys within the changing room made it easy and welcomed me. There’s no big egos and it’s just a great bunch of guys all striving for one common goal.

“It’s summed up nicely by a few guys saying it’s been the most enjoyable environment in a changing room that Derbyshire have had for a while.”
