Gary Wilson says it is an honour to lead Derbyshire after the wicketkeeper-batsman was announced as Captain for the Natwest T20 Blast campaign.

The 31-year-old will work closely with Twenty20 Specialist Coach John Wright as Derbyshire look to build upon recent improvements in the format.

Wilson said: “When John asked me it didn’t take long for me to accept. It’s an honour to captain the county and I’m looking forward to it.

“In Twenty20 cricket, everyone is beatable. We will try and get off to a good start but it is important we keep the processes the same and do the basics well.

“The supporters, the players and the Club have big expectations so we are looking forward to the competition.

“We’ve brought in two international class bowlers in Imran Tahir and Matt Henry. We’ve also got natural ball strikers and experience in the middle order so we shape up reasonably well.”

The Ireland international has played 145 Twenty20 matches, scoring 2,483 runs and claiming 96 dismissals. He also has captaincy experience, after leading Surrey in 2014 and he hopes to draw on that knowledge during the NatWest T20 Blast.

“Twenty20 Finals Day is a great experience, so to get there would be an amazing achievement but we have to not get too anxious for that first win.

“If things don’t go well at the start then we have to go back to basics and if they do then we need to keep doing those basics well as that’s what will have got us there.”
