Twenty20 Specialist Coach John Wright says preparation is key as Derbyshire build up to the NatWest T20 Blast starting next month.

The 62-year-old, who was at Derbyshire from 1977 to 1988, has returned to the Club as Twenty20 Specialist Coach ahead of the NatWest T20 Blast starting next month.

Wright holds a wealth of knowledge and experience with his most recent role being Talent Scout for the 2017 IPL winners Mumbai Indians. He also has international experience as Head Coach for India and New Zealand.

Working with Director of Cricket Kim Barnett, Wright has made two major signings for the NatWest T20 Blast campaign, bringing in South Africa international Imran Tahir and New Zealand pace bowler Matt Henry.

Wright scored nearly 15,000 runs for Derbyshire as well as over 5,000 Test runs for New Zealand and he re-joins the Club a month before the first home fixture against Yorkshire at Chesterfield on Saturday 8 July.

Wright said: “Coaching is a little bit like playing, the more you do it the more you learn. We will try and be well prepared, preparation is very important and then it’s up to the players as they are the one’s that go out and win games of cricket.”

“We will throw the ownership to the them. Let them go out and enjoy themselves and win games of cricket.”

He added: “I have always thought the supporters in Derbyshire are great. When we won at Lords in 1981 the support even back then was just fantastic. Derbyshire supporters have passion and let’s hope we can get them to the ground and show them some winning cricket.”
