Hardus Viljoen bowled his first competitive overs for the Club as the Derbyshire Second XI lost by 28 runs to Worcestershire in the Second XI One-Day Trophy at Kidderminster CC.

The South African paceman, who missed the start of the season through injury, bowled six overs as Worcestershire posted 383-6 from their 50 overs, Oliver Westbury top-scoring with 143 and off spinner Hamidullah Qadri returning 3-73.

Derbyshire fell just 29 runs short of their target, reaching 355-9, including 87 for Harvey Hosein and 66 for Tom Taylor.

After losing the toss and being put into bat, Worcestershire reached 199 without loss before Tom Kohler-Cadmore was caught by Callum Brodrick off Luis Reece for 121.

Qadri then took the first of his three wickets, George Rhodes caught by Reece for 26. The Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby spinner bowled Westbury for 143 and Alex Hepburn for 16 as Worcestershire reached 328-5 in the 45th over.

Taylor picked up two wickets, Alexei Kervezee caught for ten and Zen Malik caught by Brodrick for 6 as the hosts finished on 383-6.

The Derbyshire reply started well, Reece and Charlie Macdonell putting on 60 for the opening wicket, before Macdonell (27) was caught by Joe Dodd off the bowling of Patrick Brown.

Reece made 45, including four fours and one six, before he was caught by Kohler-Cadmore off Ben Twohig.

Tom Wood hit 30 from 27 balls before being caught and bowled by Hepburn.

Matt Critchley was bowled by Rhodes for three and Tom Milnes run out for 23 before Brodrick was bowled by Brown.

This brought Taylor to the crease to join Hosein, the pair adding 114 for the seventh wicket, before Hosein was caught off Hepburn for a well-made 87, including seven fours and one six.

Taylor hit 66 and Viljoen was unbeaten on 32 from 11 balls, but Derbyshire ultimately fell 29 runs short in their chase, closing their innings on 355-9.
