Graeme Welch was pleased to see an improved all-round performance from his bowlers as Derbyshire drew with Glamorgan at The 3aaa County Ground.
The Specsavers County Championship match ended in a draw after several weather interruptions throughout the four days and Welch was frustrated to see the weather ruin a good game of cricket.
Welch brought Tony Palladino back into the side for the match and the 32-year-old repaid his faith by returning his 10th five-wicket haul for the Club, whilst Wayne Madsen continued his fine batting form by scoring 97.
Derbyshire now travel to Northampton to face Northamptonshire from Sunday 1 May and Welch is keen to see his side continue their improvement with the ball as they seek a first win of the campaign.
Welch said: “I was pleased with the performance from the team. If the rain hadn’t have intervened, this would’ve been a very good game of cricket on a very good cricket pitch.
“It’s not very often that you see snow at the start of May. The conditions were freezing; Jacques Rudolph mentioned it’s the coldest he’s ever played in.
“I think we let them get maybe 50 too many but then we did well to get what we did in the end.”
He added: “I don’t think many people realise how good a player Wayne Madsen really is. I have been saying for the last year or two that there aren’t many better in the country. I think England would do a lot worse than to have a look at him.
“We said at the start of the season that whether you’re not playing for tactical reasons or not bowling well enough, you need to perform when you’re called upon.
“Tony Palladino has done exactly what we asked of him. He’s come in, got a good five wickets and just done what Tony does. He was successful and got us into a good position.
“The wicket here had a little bit more pace and bounce than the one at Bristol and we challenged them to step it up. I think we bowled very well as a unit and got even better in the second innings.
“We are looking forward to the next game now. We have a method in how we are going to bowl and we will stick to it if we continue to play on these pitches.”
