Welcome, Imran Tahir

Arguably the best white ball bowler in the world, Imran Tahir arrives at Derbyshire after enjoying some of the best months of his career.

Currently ranked as the world’s number one Twenty20 bowler, and the world’s number two ODI bowler, the enigmatic Tahir, who has perhaps the most energetic and recognisable celebrations in world cricket, has been in the best form of his life over the last six months for South Africa.

Tahir said: “Because I’ve been bowling in the nets to such great players – AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis – obviously you get a lot of confidence from that too. The feedback about your pace and line is really good. You get zero fear because you know if you can bowl to these guys then you can bowl to anyone in world cricket.”

He started the recent ICC Champions Trophy in England & Wales on fire, claiming 4-27 off 8.3 overs – and he claimed a run out – which saw him unleash his trademark running celebration on five occasions.

In total, the veteran spinner has taken 191 wickets in domestic Twenty20 competitions and has tormented batsman at international level with his variation, taking 54 wickets at an average of 13.70 and an economy of just 6.38.

Before the ICC Champions Trophy, he led the spin attack for Rising Pune Supergiants in the Indian Premier League, taking 18 wickets, the competitions fifth highest wicket-taker, and best figures of 3-18. His side narrowly missed out on the title, losing the final by just one run.

Tahir has an impressive strike rate of 18 across 160 domestic Twenty20 matches, which has included spells in England with Hampshire, Middlesex, Warwickshire and most recently Nottinghamshire.

Fans can expect exciting bowling, full of variation, turn and bounce, as Tahir brings a wealth of experience and exuberance to the Derbyshire bowling unit.

Alongside New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry, he will be the cornerstone of the Derbyshire Falcons’ bowling attack in the NatWest T20 Blast this July and August.
