Written by Danny Painter

William Pereira took four dismissals, and James Taylor claimed two as Derbyshire took ten wickets the opening day of their three-day friendly against Northamptonshire 2nds.

James Taylor and Hamidullah Qadri also took two wickets as Northamptonshire posted 312. Richard Levi top-scored for Northamptonshire with 131 not out, combining with Charlie Thurston (91) for a 167-run third wicket partnership.

The visitors ended the day with Ifran Karim unbeaten on 30 and Tom Wood not out on 27 at the crease on 65-1.

The Derbyshire attack got off to a strong start dismissing both openers within the first two overs. Taylor with the final ball of the first over dismissed Gay (6), with Pereira dismissing Curran (2) the following over to leave Northamptonshire 9/2.

With Levi and Thurston now at the crease, Northamptonshire rebuilt on a promising start for Derbyshire. Thurston was dismissed after being caught by Qadri off Connor Marshall to end the partnership to leave Northamptonshire 176/3.

Pereira then took the wickets of Claydon (1) and King (1) in consecutive overs to leave the hosts 188/5.

Tom Sole came to the crease to put on an 80-run stand with Levi for the sixth wicket, before Priestley broke the partnership bowling the former (48), two runs short of his half-century.

Levi brought up his century shortly after that dismissal, hitting 12 fours in the 170 balls that it took for him to reach the milestone. The final four wickets fell for 44 runs. First, Qadri trapped Bramley (4) lbw before bowling Haddow (6) with Derbyshire targeting the tail-enders.

The final two wickets fell when Taylor dismissed Bhabra (12) and Pereira took his fourth wicket by trapping Gribben (2) lbw to end Northamptonshire’s first innings on 312.

In response, Savid Perera (8) fell early on after being trapped lbw by Gribben. Tom Wood and Ifran Karim brought up their 50-run partnership shortly before the end of Day One to trail the hosts by 247 runs.
