du Plooy wants to build on victory

Leus du Plooy wants Derbyshire to take momentum from their convincing win over Yorkshire into the rest of the Vitality Blast campaign.

The Falcons produced a dominant performance at Headingley to defeat their rivals by 55 runs, Derbyshire’s sixth-consecutive win over the Vikings.

Wayne Madsen (66) and du Plooy (51) scored half-centuries as the visitors posted a total of more than 200 runs for the first time in this year’s competition, while Logan van Beek claimed career-best figures of 4-17.

Derbyshire have won two of their last three games, and host reigning champions Worcestershire tomorrow, before facing Leicestershire on Thursday at The Pattonair County Ground.

With the Falcons now more than halfway through the Vitality Blast, du Plooy hopes that the side can take the confidence gained from the win over Yorkshire into their next six T20s.

“It’s so much sweeter if you can contribute to a winning cause, that’s what we did (against Yorkshire) and it is amazing how much better that feels,” said du Plooy.

“The vibe after a win is one hundred times better, it just shows how important it is to stay level-headed, and hopefully now we can get a few wins under our belt.

“I think that it is still very closely contested, everyone is beating everyone. You can easily find yourself second and then drop to fifth, just as you can be sixth or seventh and end up taking third.

“The latter-part of this competition is crucial, the depth of teams is going to be tested and fatigue will come into play heavily.”

Throughout the campaign, the Falcons have been well supported at home having seen back-to-back sell outs against Yorkshire Vikings and Notts Outlaws, while last week’s fixture against Durham also saw a good crowd in Derby.

With two home matches in the space of just three days, du Plooy says that the Derbyshire supporters will play their part during a big week in Derby.

“It always helps when you win, but I have been really impressed by our home support so far,”  added du Plooy.

“They have been awesome to play in front of and hopefully they can put us in good stead moving forward.”
