Derbyshire Abroad: McDermott the match-winner

Ben McDermott ensured that Hobart Hurricanes would enjoy a very Merry Christmas, after his match-winning 89 not out against Melbourne Renegades ensured they would be top of the Big Bash table until at least Boxing Day.

The wicketkeeper-batsman’s big-hitting ability was on full display, as he struck seven fours and five sixes in just 55 balls, as he guided his side to three wins from their opening four matches.

McDermott, who will join Derbyshire for the 2021 Vitality Blast and Royal London Cup, was the key man as Hobart chased down their target of 161 to win with 14 balls remaining.

The six-wicket victory takes Hobart to the top of the Big Bash table with 11 points, at least four points ahead of any side that plays before Christmas Day.

Australia international McDermott is the second-highest run-scorer in the competition, having struck 135 runs from just two innings, at a strike rate of 153.40.
