Dominic Cork admitted that the Falcons let the game get away from them in their narrow defeat to Notts Outlaws.

Having starting strongly with both bat and ball, Derbyshire fell to a two-run defeat at Trent Bridge, as Samit Patel’s 64 not out, and 2-14, edged out half-centuries from Luis Reece and Leus du Plooy.

Logan van Beek and George Scrimshaw each claimed three wickets, as both sides batted for 15 overs after heavy rain delayed the start of play in Nottingham.

Derbyshire how now lost four of their opening six Vitality Blast games, with chances to win coming in each of those defeats. Twenty20 Head Coach, Cork, says there are plenty of encouraging signs within the squad, but they need to get better at being ruthless when on top in matches.

“That hurts more than any other loss we’ve had. We should have beaten Nottinghamshire,” he told BBC Radio Derby.

“Credit to them, they know how to put you under pressure and Samit Patel was excellent, but after the way we started, we’ve just let ourselves down. It was a fantastic game, but it’s a game we let slip away.

“We gave them 15-20 runs too many, we didn’t execute our yorkers as effectively as we’ve talked about. They played well, got a little bit of luck, but in that period of finishing it off, they jut got too many runs.

“I’ve always said to anybody that follows my teams, we’re going to keep attacking and keep going, but when you lose wickets, you lose momentum.

“As a coach, I’m saying to the lads now to look at what Notts did, a side under pressure, who knew they probably should be losing that game, what did they do slightly better than us?

“We’ve not been outplayed in any game so far, which in some ways is encouraging, but also disappointing, because with a little bit more focus and better execution, you might be looking at a Derbyshire side in the top four.”
