VIDEO: Wilson trains in Derby

DerbyshireTV spoke to wicketkeeper-batsman Gary Wilson as he returned to training at The 3aaa County Ground ahead of international duty with Ireland.

Netting in Derby before departing for Dubai with the Ireland squad, Wilson has a busy month ahead of him. First the 31-year-old is set to complete the final round of Intercontinental Cup fixtures against Scotland, before switching to the one-day format for a three-match series against Afghanistan.

He said: “It’s my first day back and I’m just trying to get some good preparation in for the next month or so.

“We’ve got the Intercontinental Cup and we need to get an outright win and hope Afghanistan don’t get an outright win. So it’s not in really our hands, but we’ve got three ODIs against Afghanistan as well so they’re important for us in the build up to World Cup qualifying in March.

Looking ahead to 2018 with Derbyshire, the experienced all-format player wants to build on the progress made last season and target a place at Twenty20 Finals Day.

Wilson added: “We made some good strides in 2017 and we had a very good run in Twenty20, but we also got three good wins in the Championship as well. Everyone’s seen progress and hopefully we can go that bit further in 2018.

“I feel like I had a decent influence on the Twenty20 squad and we gave it a good run. We’re slightly disappointed not to get to Finals Day and hopefully we can go one further next year. I know all the boys are keen to get to Birmingham, so hopefully that’s how it works out.”
