Matt Critchley has arrived in India for a six-week placement, facilitated by the ECB, to work on his all-round game in turning conditions on the sub-continent.
The 22-year-old travelled to Mumbai alongside Leicestershire’s Callum Parkinson, with the pair set to continue their development in overseas conditions after much work with ECB spin bowling coach, Peter Such.
Critchley, who has scored 1,480 first-class runs and taken 42 first-class wickets for Derbyshire, has already experienced overseas conditions, spending time in the West Indies with the England Lions and out in Australia for winter placements.
He now looks to build on the skills he has worked on and pick up new information from experienced sub-continent coaches before returning for a full season with Derbyshire, during which he wants to compete in all forms.
Critchley said: “I’ll be looking to try and improve the skills I’ve started to work on, both batting and bowling, but it’s also a good life experience too.
“I’ve played around the world a bit now, so I’ve got used to a few different conditions, but this will be new to me.
“I’ll face a lot of spin, so I’ll try and improve that aspect of my game with the bat.
“But one of the main reasons why I want to go is to build on my leg spin, listen to as many people’s theories as I can over there and look to improve.
“I want to be a genuine all-rounder with bat and ball across all forms, so this sort of experience can only be good for me.”
