A powerful right-handed batsman who’s equally adept behind the stumps, Ben McDermott has joined Derbyshire for the 2020 Vitality Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup.
The son of former Australia fast-bowler Craig McDermott, wicketkeeper-batsman Ben has already forged his own path into international cricket, with 11 Twenty20 appearances for the Aussies so far.
At 24, McDermott has experience across all three formats, having played in almost 100 matches throughout his career.
McDermott’s List A debut came in 2014, and he has since scored 929 runs in just 19 matches, at an average of 54.64.
He has struck three centuries and five half-centuries in that time, meaning that he’s passed 50 in every 2.3 innings that he bats in the 50-over game.
He has also established himself in the Twenty20 arena, scoring almost 1,000 runs in 40 innings, including one century, at an average of 31.35.
In the 2018-19 Big Bash, McDermott was the eighth-highest run-scorer with 376 runs at 37.60, more than the likes of Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch.
The Australia international has also proven himself to be effective with the gloves, with 46 career catches to his name.
McDermott’s Australia bow came against the United Arab Emirates in 2018, where he struck the winning run in a seven-wicket victory, while his international high-score of 32 not out came against India in the same year.
The wicketkeeper-batsman featured for Australia in their recent T20 series with Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and he will be looking to keep that momentum going during his time with Derbyshire.
