Alex Hughes is the latest player to commit his future to Derbyshire after signing a one-year extension to keep him at the Club until the end of the 2021 season.

The Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby graduate featured in every match this campaign, scoring 918 runs and taking 32 wickets.

The 27-year-old was the county’s leading wicket-taking in the Vitality Blast this summer, claiming a joint Club-record 17 wickets at an average of 19 and best figures of 4-42.

He scored 737 first-class runs in 2018 at an average of 30, including one hundred and five half-centuries, and took 10 wickets.

In total, Hughes has played 181 matches for Derbyshire, scoring 3,994 runs and taking 107 wickets.

Head of Cricket, Dave Houghton said: “Alex is a hard worker and a consistent performer across all formats – with the bat, ball and in the field.

“He is a young guy who has come through the Academy and become an important player in the first team, playing in every match for the last two seasons.

“He’s a player we can build a team around for years to come and we’re delighted he has committed his long-term future to the Club.”

Hughes added: “I’ve grown up playing cricket for Derbyshire and I see my long-term future here. I’m buzzing to extend my contract and I am very grateful to the Club for this opportunity.

“It’s great to have Houghts back and I know he shares the same ambitions as me and that is to win trophies for Derbyshire.”
