Lancashire win in rain-affected run chase

Lancashire Lightning claimed victory off the penultimate ball of the match after being set a revised total in a heavily rain-affected fixture at Blackpool.

Ben Slater top scored with a run-a-ball unbeaten 60, while Shiv Thakor hit 38 off 33 balls, as Derbyshire hit 132-2 off 21.3 overs before rain ended their innings.

Set a revised 161 to win off 18 overs, the hosts reached their target with one ball and three wickets remaining thanks to 22 not out from Stephen Parry and 39 from Karl Brown. Thakor took 3-23 off 3.5 overs.

Billy Godleman said: “Firstly we were not helped by the decision to come off the field when we did. We’d played in the heaviness of rain we came off for in the 40 minutes previous. To not have the extra overs to mount a bigger total was disappointing.

“Even when we came out again, we came out a good few overs too early. In the first three or four overs we had five different slips from guys in the outfield. But I was really pleased with how the guys put that to one side and contributed to a tight and exciting game of cricket.

“We clawed it right back. In the end, we gave it away. In the last three overs, had we had a bit higher standard in the field, we’d have won this game.”

Lancashire won the toss and elected to bowl first under overcast skies as play got underway on time at 11am.

It was a stop start opening to the innings as rain forced the players off after two overs, then again after eight overs, but Derbyshire had made a steady start on 41-0.

Play was delayed for two hours, but when the players came back out the openers continued to score well, moving the opening stand to 59 before Godleman was first man out for 20.

Slater, who dominated the early scoring, was playing nicely and passed fifty for the third time in five one-day innings this summer. New batsman Thakor took over the scoring hitting 38 off 33 balls, two fours and two sixes – including one off Jimmy Anderson which went out of the ground – before he was second man out.

Wayne Madsen (4 not out) faced two balls before heavy rain arrived to end the innings after 21.3 overs, with Derbyshire 132-2. Slater was 60 not out off 60 balls, which included 10 fours.

Lancashire was set a revised total of 161 off 18 overs to win by Duckworth/Lewis.

After a fast start from the Lightning openers, Thakor got the breakthrough in the sixth over removing Alex Davies for 21, with the hosts 42-1.

New man Liam Livingstone hit 15, before he fell to Jeevan Mendis (2-38), caught in the deep by Wayne Madsen, to set the hosts 96 to win off 10 overs.

Vilas fell soon after, a great catch off his own bowling by Thakor, before a couple of quick wickets went down in the following overs to leave the hosts needing 66 off six overs.

Some big hits from Ryan McLaren (16) helped move Lancashire along, before three boundaries in the penultimate over from Parry (22 not out) left the Lightning needing seven off the last.

It was Parry who hit the winning runs off the penultimate ball to claim victory by three wickets (D/L). Thakor was the pick of the Derbyshire bowlers with 3-23 off 3.5 overs.
