Derbyshire continue their Specsavers County Championship campaign with a visit to the south coast to take on Sussex at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove.

Heritage Officer, David Griffin, looks at the statistical background to games between the two sides at Hove.

Derbyshire and Sussex have met in 136 previous games in first-class cricket, of which 40 have taken place at Hove, with Derbyshire winning on 10 occasions.

The first game took place in August 1880, when Derbyshire triumphed by nine wickets, and while Derbyshire’s record for many years wasn’t great, their recent form has been very good, winning seven of the 10 games played at Hove since 1968.

The last game ended in a win for Sussex, in 2016, while Derbyshire won the previous match in 2013, when Tim Groenewald’s 5-40 was instrumental in Derbyshire winning their first game back in Division One.

Just three Derbyshire players have scored centuries at Hove; EM Ashcroft in 1904, JG Wright in 1979, and KJ Barnett in 1990, while Adrian Rollins is the only Derbyshire player to carry his bat there, making 78 out of an innings total of 220 in 1996.

Fred Swarbrook leads the way amongst the bowlers, taking a remarkable 9-20 in 1975, the fourth best innings bowling analysis by any Derbyshire bowler, with match figures of 13-62.

Henry Evans, with just 19 first class wickets for Derbyshire, took the only hat trick for the county in 1881, finishing with 6-60 in a nine-wicket defeat.

Derbyshire’s final home game is vs Kent at Chesterfield. Save £4 by purchasing your matchday tickets in advance. While further discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Buy online or call 01332 388 101.
