Derbyshire Women will face a Worcestershire Rapids Invitational XI in a special Twenty20 fixture, sponsored by Briggs of Burton, before NatWest T20 Blast cricket takes centre stage at The 3aaa County Ground on Friday 17 July.

The women’s fixture which starts at 2pm, will celebrate the Club’s bid for Derby to become a host city for the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup and entry will be FREE, if you arrive before 3pm. The men’s NatWest T20 Blast fixture between Derbyshire Falcons and Worcestershire Rapids begins at 7pm.

A giant white ball will be on display for the fixture, plus the landmark set of giant stumps, manufactured by stainless steel specialists Briggs of Burton to signify the Club’s bid, will also be installed on the Pentagon Roundabout in time for the fixture.

The stumps will be funded by local businesses and private donors who will each pledge £500 to become part of the #WereBackingTheBid campaign and be involved in the development, unveiling and publicity surrounding the sculpture as well as featuring on a Partners Plaque.

Derbyshire Cricket Board Development Manager, Richard Wood said: “We are already visiting over 200 primary schools across Derbyshire through our Chance to Shine programme and the activities are great fun for girls and boys.

“By raising the profile of the Derbyshire Women’s side, we hope to inspire more girls to connect with local clubs, carry on playing and perhaps go on to represent their county or even their country.”

Chief Executive, Simon Storey added: “This is a brilliant opportunity to showcase the development of women’s cricket.

“Our bid to become a host city of the ICC Women’s World Cup is inspired by the ambition to leave a long term legacy. By opening up The 3aaa County Ground for a Women’s Twenty20, as well as a Men’s NatWest T20 Blast fixture, we hope to inspire more girls to look at cricket as a sport that they can enjoy both for fun and more competitively.”
