Seconds take lead into Day Two versus MCCU

Rob Hemmings scored 87 batting at number 11 for Derbyshire Second XI, before Tom Milnes and Tom Taylor both returned four wickets to help secure a first-innings lead over MCC Universities at Denby Cricket Club.

In the Second XI Championship match, Seconds’ skipper Tom Knight decided to bat first having won the toss and the hosts managed to post 226 all out with Knight (34), George Sellars (29) and Milnes (32 not out), on loan from Warwickshire, all contributing as well as top-scorer Hemmings.

Hemmings, a member of the Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby, hit 14 fours and two sixes in his 87 as part of a 115-run stand for the final wicket with Milnes, as Derbyshire recovered from 111-9 to 226 all out.

On loan Milnes continued his fine form with the ball for the seconds as he returned 4-52 after taking 10 wickets in the previous match, whilst Taylor (4-39 off 16 overs) also secured four wickets.

The other two MCCU wickets fell to Hemmings (2-41) as the visitors were bowled out for 156 at the close to hand Derbyshire a first-innings lead of 70 going into the second day.
