Alex Hughes has signed a one-year contract extension with Derbyshire, committing him to the Club until the end of the 2017 season.

Hughes made 24 first-team appearances in 2015 and was a regular for the county across all formats last summer.

The 24-year-old struck his maiden first-class century, scoring an unbeaten 111 in the victory at Northampton in July and ended the County Championship campaign with a batting average of 35.

The all-rounder also featured heavily in the one-day competitions, scoring over 200 runs and claiming 16 wickets in 17 matches.

In total, Hughes has made 86 appearances for Derbyshire scoring 1,456 runs and claiming 60 wickets across three formats.

Elite Performance Director, Graeme Welch said: “Alex performed well across all three competitions in 2015, making match-winning contributions on several occasions – most notable in the Championship match at Northampton and the Twenty20 victory over Yorkshire at Chesterfield.

“He’s a versatile player who provides options with both bat and ball. It’s important that he now kicks on and continues to perform to a high standard.

“Alex is another young talented player we have at the Club and they will play an important part for Derbyshire in the future.”

Hughes added: “I’m delighted to extend my contract and commit my future to Derbyshire. I hope I can continue to improve and play a leading role as we push for success.”
