Critchley spins Derbyshire to victory

Matt Critchley took career best figures of 6-106 to inspire Derbyshire to a 39-run victory over Northamptonshire on the final day at Queen’s Park, Chesterfield.

All-rounder Critchley impressed with both bat and ball as he added to his half-century in Derbyshire’s second innings to claim ten wickets in the match, while Hamidullah Qadri claimed figures of 3-66.

Derbyshire secured their second win of the Specsavers County Championship campaign, after taking seven wickets in the morning session on day four whilst conceding just 100 runs.

Earlier in the match, Wayne Madsen hit his 27th first-class century for the Club while Dan Wheeldon also took his maiden first-class wicket.

There were also half-centuries for Harvey Hosein and Gary Wilson in the first innings, as Derbyshire produced an impressive all-round performance to claim their first win at Chesterfield in over ten years.

Unbeaten on 48 overnight, Northamptonshire captain Alex Wakely brought up his half-century from 91 balls in the second over of the day.

However, his partner Richard Levi (29) fell shortly after as Critchley got a timely breakthrough to end the 64-run partnership.

The spin duo of Critchley and Qadri paid dividends for the hosts, as the latter took the crucial wicket to remove Wakely for 68.

Northamptonshire continued to lose wickets at regular intervals at Critchley added two more wickets to his tally as Steven Crook (21) and Josh Cobb (9) both fell.

Sri-Lanka international Seekkuge Prasanna came to the crease to provide a spirited resistance for Northamptonshire, clearing the ropes to bring the visitors within 70 runs of victory.

However, Critchley claimed his five-wicket haul shortly after to remove Prasanna for 27, before Qadri deceived Brett Hutton (1) to bowl him in the next over.

The visitors had slipped to 266-9 after earlier being 187-3, and Critchley, who bowle throughout the entire morning session, then took his tenth of the match to spin Derbyshire to a 39-run victory.
