Derbyshire draw with Glamorgan

Wednesday 27th April 2016
Written by Danny Painter

Heavy rain and a hailstorm meant that only a little over a session of play was possible on Day Four as Derbyshire drew with Glamorgan at The 3aaa County Ground.

Derbyshire had managed to score 345 in their first innings with Andy Carter securing a career-best first-class score of 39 and Tom Poynton left unbeaten on 36.

Taking a 32-run lead into the second innings, Glamorgan lost a couple of early wickets to Luke Fletcher and Wes Durston but some careful batting by Jacques Rudolph (21 not out) and Chris Cooke (22 not out), in addition to some stormy weather, meant that the game petered out to a draw.

Having begun the day on 331-9, Derbyshire had a fourth batting bonus point in sight. They could not reach it, however, as Carter was caught by Graham Wagg off Michael Hogan for a career-best 39 as the hosts were all out for 345.

That gave Glamorgan a 32-run lead from the first innings over their hosts and they set about adding to that until opener James Kettleborough was bowled shouldering arms by Fletcher on 20. It was the second time in the match that the Glamorgan opener had been bowled offering no shot.

The wicket of first-innings centurion, Will Bragg, followed shortly after when he came forward to Durston and was given out lbw for 10.

The visitors reached lunch on 47-2 with a lead of 79 with Rudolph and Cooke playing resolutely either side of the interval.

The players were forced off for bad light at 2.30pm before a mixture of hail, snow and rain made the outfield far too wet to continue. The umpires inspected at 3.45pm before concluding that there would be no more play and the match ended as a draw.

Derbyshire claimed 11 points from the fixture, whilst Glamorgan took 12. Graeme Welch’s men are back in action on Sunday for the Specsavers County Championship match away at Northamptonshire.
