Shiv Thakor claimed three wickets and Ben Slater hit 51, but Notts Outlaws claimed victory in the Royal London One-Day Cup fixture at Welbeck Colliery.
The hosts had set their visitors 341 to win after a century from Riki Wessels and a quick-fire 59 from Captain Chris Read, despite Thakor’s 3-78 and a further four wickets shared between the other bowlers.
In reply, Derbyshire were dismissed for 275 with Slater top-scoring on 51, and both Matt Critchley and Harvey Hosein hitting career-best scores of 43 and 40 respectively, as Notts ran out winners by 65 runs.
Having decided to bowl first, the Falcons got their reward for some tight bowling in the early overs when Wayne Madsen pouched Michael Lumb (15) at point off Thakor, before the all-rounder picked up his second wicket in his following over – Greg Smith caught behind for one.
That brought Brendan Taylor to the crease who, with Wessels, put together a third-wicket stand worth 122 within 13 overs, that boosted Notts’ score from 48-2 to 170-3 when Wessels top-edged a reverse-sweep off Critchley and was caught for 114 from 85 balls.
Taylor had supported Wessels well but holed out to long-on in the following over, off the bowling of Wes Durston, having scored 44.
Samit Patel and Dan Christian added 54 for the fifth wicket to take their side past 200, but Patel skied a pull to fine-leg off Cotton for 31, and then Alex Hughes trapped Christian (28) lbw in the next over.
Notts then accelerated during the final 10 overs to get up to and beyond 300, with Read and Steven Mullaney (39 not out) batting aggressively until the former was bowled via a Thakor slower ball for 59 as the hosts completed their 50 overs on 340-7.
Despite losing Durston (six) early on, the Falcons made a solid start to their pursuit of 341 with Slater continuing his fine form in white-ball cricket.
He moved to his half-century by striking his 48th ball through the covers for his eighth four, but feathered his next ball through to the keeper to fall for 51 with Derbyshire 72-2 in the 13th over.
The Falcons then lost Madsen (eight) and Hamish Rutherford (26) while only four runs were added to leave them 103-4, and the Outlaws in total control of the fixture.
At the midway point of their reply, Derbyshire needed a further 200 runs to win with Thakor and Broom rotating the strike well, but Thakor was then bowled by Mullaney for 29 in the 27th over.
When Broom fell for 25, caught at mid-wicket to become Mullaney’s second victim, and Alex Hughes was adjudged lbw to Patel on 14, Derbyshire were 179-7 after 34 overs.
That brought together Critchley and Harvey Hosein who showed fight to put on 63 for the eighth wicket, with Critchley striking a career-best 43 from 38 balls, having hit Mullaney for three fours and a six in an over at one point.
Hosein, meanwhile, was batting well in his first innings in List A cricket and playing the ramp shot impressively until he was caught at extra-cover for 40.
Tony Palladino was last man out, caught and bowled by Gurney for 15, as Derbyshire were bowled out for 275 to hand Notts victory by 65 runs.
