Gleadall takes three for England Under 19s
Alfie Gleadall claimed three wickets on his England Under 19s debut as his side ran out nine-wicket winners against South Africa at Scarborough, securing a first Test win in 12 attempts.
The 18-year-old seamer impressed Under 19s coach Jon Lewis with recent performances for Derbyshire and earned his maiden England call-up for the two-match Youth Test series versus South Africa.
Also named in the squad was talented off-spinner Hamidullah Qadri and Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby fast bowler, Sam Conners.
Conners impressed the England coaches during an Invitational XI fixture against the touring South Africans in Loughborough last week to earn his first call-up to a national squad.
He has featured in a number of Second XI matches this summer under the coaching of Head of Development, Mal Loye, who continues his development of the Derbyshire players in his role as Batting Coach during the series.
After bowling out South Africa for 232, during which Gleadall returned figures of 1-47 from 15 overs, England built a first innings lead of 73 at Scarborough.
The young England bowlers then skittled the visitors for 161, Gleadall again impressing with 2-24 from 7.5 overs, to set England just 88 runs to win, which they surpassed inside 14 overs.
The teams meet again in a second four-day match at Durham’s Emirates Riverside starting on Monday 16 July, before a three-match Royal London One-Day Series the following week, for which a separate squad will be announced.
