Billy Godleman was pleased that Derbyshire ended their home Specsavers County Championship campaign with a win.

The hosts defeated a Sussex side that was still in contention for promotion by 181 runs, with Godleman and Luis Reece scoring centuries, while the latter also claimed five wickets in the first innings.

Having only scored 138 in their first innings, Derbyshire fought back to claim victory at The Pattonair County Ground, and Godleman was pleased with the resolve shown by the side.

“It was an amazing game,” Godleman said.

“Normally in four-day cricket, you have a sense at the start of each day how things are going to pan out, but this one threw up a random set of events each day.

“After getting bowled out for 138 in the first innings, to win the game comfortably is a big achievement.”

Reece scored 184 at a-run-a-ball in the second innings, as he and Godleman put on 274 for the opening wicket.

Godleman went on to score 106 himself, but he reserved praise for his opening partner after the hard work he has put in with bat and ball throughout the season.

“It was nice to be able to knock one into the leg-side and get to the other end to watch Luis hit two or three boundaries every over,” he added.

“I said to the players that it was the best innings I have seen, across all formats and that is saying something because there have been some good ones.

“I am so pleased for Reecey as well, because he opens the bowling and the batting, which is not easy but he has kept fronting up in some difficult periods.”
