Godleman: Lessons learned in 2016

Billy Godleman says the passion to succeed will spur Derbyshire ahead of their preparation for the 2017 campaign.

The opening batsman, who embarked on his first season as four-day Captain, accepts the results are not what they would have wanted in 2016, but insists the squad will learn and gain plenty of experience from the summer.

“It’s an incredible privilege and honour to have the opportunity to captain the Club and lead my friends out on the cricket field day in and day out,” said Godleman.

“But it’s been a very challenging season – evidently the results are not what we would’ve wanted them to be. The only way is up in Championship cricket.

“We have incredible support at the Club and real good pool of young, local talent and we will be doing all we can from when we get back in November until we bowl our first ball next season so that we can keep developing and win games for Derbyshire.

“In 50-over cricket, we’re a very competitive and dangerous team and we can beat anyone on the day.

“We started off the competition very well but weren’t quite able to qualify for the quarter-finals. We didn’t play well enough in the second phase of the competition.

“But we’ve played some good one-day cricket over the past couple seasons and we’re looking forward to the white-ball competitions next summer, and hopefully we will see some progression.”

He added: “The last third of the season has been a real opportunity to give the younger guys the opportunity to take the new ball, bat in the top three and get some opportunity of playing first-class cricket.

“You can’t fast-track experience and with the support of senior players that do have experience we are going in the right direction.

“The exciting aspect of this job is that we have a strong nucleus of not only hard-working but very talented young cricketers – it looks good for the future, but we need to get more results on the field and we’re all determined to do that next season.”
