Alex Hughes top-scored with a stubborn 44, but Lancashire Second XI enjoyed the better of the second day of the friendly at The 3aaa County Ground, after Day One was abandoned due to a wet outfield.

Derbyshire’s batsmen toiled away in the heat, but failed to create any significant partnerships during the innings, the best of which was worth 39, coming between Greg Cork (19) and Hughes (44).

They were eventually bowled out for 138 in just more than 52 overs, with Lancashire’s paceman Toby Lester taking impressive figures of 6-27.

Derbyshire took two early wickets in Lancashire’s reply, but a third-wicket partnership of 115 between Josh Bohannon (61) and Chris Laker (55 not out) suppressed Derbyshire’s progress with the ball.

After winning toss and choosing to bat, Derbyshire’s first innings struggled to get going throughout, with only four batsmen reaching double-figures.

Lancashire’s bowlers took wickets at regular intervals, with Lester (6-27) and Luis Reece (3-33) doing the damage, Hughes providing Derbyshire’s only real resistance with a gritty innings of 44 off 109 balls.

In reply, Will Davis (1-25) and Ben Cotton (1-25), took the early wickets of openers Reece (0) and Karl Brown (6) respectively.

But then a partnership of 115 between Bohannon and Laker frustrated the Derbyshire bowlers, before Greg Cork (1-8) eventually made the breakthrough, having Bohannon lbw for 61 shortly before the close.

Laker and wicketkeeper Bradley Yates safely made it through the rest of the day, with Lancashire reaching 139-3 at the close, leading by one run.
