Derbyshire County Cricket Club has been advised of the death of former player, John Hampshire, aged 76.
John spent the majority of his playing career with Yorkshire, playing eight Test matches for England, scoring a hundred on his debut against the West Indies at Lord’s in 1969.
After a long and prolific career at Yorkshire he moved to Derbyshire in 1982 and spent three seasons as a hugely influential figure, and was invaluable as a wise and experienced adviser in 1983 to the newly-appointed 22 year-old captain, Kim Barnett.
While his best seasons were behind him when he joined Derbyshire at the age of 41, he still scored in excess of 2,500 first class runs and almost 800 List A runs during his three year stay.
On his retirement he became a well-respected umpire, standing in Test Matches around the world, and subsequently worked as a mentor to umpires, amongst other roles within the game. Latterly, he was President of Yorkshire CCC.
John was a regular visitor to Derbyshire and always demonstrated a genuine interest in his former club.
