With the big local derby versus Notts Outlaws approaching fast on Friday 24 June, we look back at the last time the Outlaws visited The 3aaa County Ground for what would prove to be a historic occasion for the hosts.
It was a 34-run victory for the Falcons when the Notts Outlaws last visited The 3aaa County Ground in 2015. It was a game that saw Chesney Hughes and Nathan Rimmington excel for Derbyshire.
Rimmington’s (3-24) bowling performance proved to be pivotal in the Falcons’ win. The Aussie took the final two wickets of the game to cause the Outlaws’ run chase grind to a halt.
Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat first and set the visitors a total of 202 to win, which is the Falcons’ highest ever score in Twenty20 cricket on home soil.
Hamish Rutherford and Wes Durston (11) opened the batting for the Falcons with the New Zealander finding his rhythm early on by hitting 37 runs off 20 balls.
Ben Hilfenhaus (3-29) would account for both of the openers’ wickets before Hughes (52) asserted himself on the innings by hitting his 50 in 27 balls including five fours and three sixes.
A contribution of 24 from Alex Hughes, before Tom Knight (18*) and Tom Poynton (13*) added useful runs in the lower order, helped nudge the Falcons to their 201 total.
Rimmington began the Outalws’ innings where he would eventually leave it – in the wickets. Notts and England opener Alex Hales (0) was bowled all ends up for a Golden Duck to the delight of a bumper home crowd.
The Notts side then dug their heels in and showed some resistance. Riki Wessels’ 66 was proving most troublesome, the Australian finding the boundary with nine fours and three sixes, before Wes Durston (2-35) broke his stride in the tenth over.
The last five wickets fell for just 12 runs of 15 balls. Two quick run outs to remove Daniel Christian (2) and Greg Smith (4) sparked the Falcons’ bowling attack into life with Rimmington taking his final two wickets for two runs off five balls.
