Narrow defeat for seconds
Derbyshire suffered a narrow defeat as Nottinghamshire won by two runs in the Second XI friendly at The Pattonair County Ground.
Each side batted for 55 overs in Derby, with Chris Gibson (102 not out) and Kashif Ali (100 not out) combining in a 222-run partnership for the visitors, who did not lose a wicket.
Tom Wood top-scored with 74 for Derbyshire, who managed 220-6 before the close of play, with the hosts falling just short of the winning target.
Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bowl, but they were unable to make an early breakthrough as Gibson and Ali put on 117 before lunch, and went on to add a further 105 runs in the 21 overs that followed the interval.
Both batsmen reached their centuries before the end of the innings, with Gibson’s coming off 181 balls, including seven fours and two sixes, while Ali’s arrived off 149 balls, nine of which resulted in fours.
Set 223 to win, Derbyshire found themselves 44-2 at tea, with Mattie McKiernan (19) falling soon after the interval after a partnership of 52 with Wood.
Josh Lacey and Wood put on 74 runs for the fourth wicket, the only other half-century partnership in the innings, as the latter reached his 50 in 90 balls, including eight fours.
Wood (74) and Priestley (29) fell in the final five overs of the match as the hosts fell short of the target, with just two runs scored off the final eight balls.
