Written by Danny Painter

Tom Milnes claimed match figures of 10-60 on his Derbyshire Second XI debut as they defeated Northamptonshire inside two days in a low-scoring encounter at Swarkestone CC.

Milnes, who recently joined the county on a one-month loan deal from Warwickshire, claimed 6-25 in the first innings before returning figures of 4-35 to help dismiss Northamptonshire for 94, and seal a 38-run victory for his new club.

Derbyshire were bowled out for 95 in their first innings as Northants’ Richard Gleeson took 6-22, with Tom Knight (25) and Harvey Hosein (24) the only Derbyshire players to get starts.

Milnes, ably backed up by Tom Taylor (3-49), helped the home side get back into the match as Northamptonshire were bowled out for 135 in reply.

After conceding a first innings lead of 40, Derbyshire were dismissed for 172 second time around despite a quick-fire 41 from Jonathan Clare. Mitchell Spencer claimed 6-27 in 12 overs for the visitors.

Northamptonshire were set 133 to win but there was yet another twist as Derbyshire’s bowlers had the final say.

Milnes and Taylor (2-25) were in form again, while Rob Hemmings took 3-1 to finish off the tail and complete a fine victory.
