Second XI out Leicestershire on Day One

Thursday 20th July 2017
Written by Danny Painter

Matt Sonczak took 6-57 as Derbyshire Second XI bowled out Leicestershire for 296 on the first day of their Championship fixture at Kibworth CC.

Leicestershire won the toss and decided to bat, but Derbyshire had an early breakthrough as Gurjit Sandhu (2-60) had the experienced Paul Horton lbw for four in the second over of the day.

Greg Cork (1-37) took the second wicket of the day, bowling Harry Dearden for 23. Shortly after, Mark Pettini was lbw to Tom Taylor (1-66) as Leicestershire slumped to 55-3.

Sam Evans (107) and Will Fazarkley put on 67 for the fourth wicket taking Leicestershire up to 122 before Sandhu took his second wicket, this time Fazarkely caught by Cork for 30.

Sonczak came into the attack as the visitors looked to capitalise on early wickets. His first wicket of the day was Mosun Hosein lbw for 29, before he removed the set Evans lbw for a well-made 107.

Leicestershire rallied with a 48-run partnership between Benjamin Mike and Richard Jones (30) but Sonczak had Mike caught behind by Hosein for 43, Derbyshire back in control.

The final three wickets fell in quick succession, Sonczak claiming all of them to finish with figures of 6-57 from 19 overs as Leicestershire were all out for 296.

Bad light meant Derbyshire could not start their innings and they will resume on Day Two with play scheduled to start at 11.00am.
