To celebrate the 150th year of Derbyshire County Cricket Club, we’re launching a new series in which we sit down with players, staff, legends and Members to find out just what the club means to them.
First up is Wayne Madsen, who discusses his decade-long association with the club, his love of the club’s ‘family feel’ and what he believes the club means to the county of Derbyshire.
The batsman joined the club in 2009 and has gone on to score more than 16,000 runs across three formats for the county, undoubtedly affirming his status as a modern great in the process.
The 35-year-old believes that the club’s close ties to the Derbyshire community is one of the things that makes it so special, and is looking forward to celebrating a special 2020 season with Members.
“This club has pretty much been my cricketing career, it means the world to me and my family,” said Madsen.
“We have settled here in Derbyshire, it’s such a beautiful county and the cricket club is so family-orientated, that makes things really special.
“It’s welcoming, whether you are a young kid or someone who has retired and just enjoys their cricket. It’s not just the people who come down to watch, it’s the staff, the players and everyone affiliated with the club, it’s just a special place to be.”
