David Wainwright made his return from injury on the first day of the Second XI friendly at Northamptonshire on Tuesday.
The hosts enjoyed the better of the opening day of the three-day fixture, with opener Kyle Coetzer carrying his bat throughout the innings, scoring an unbeaten 250, before declaring on 448-6.
Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby prospect Matt Critchley starred with the ball for Derbyshire, taking 3-69 from his 16 overs.
Fellow Academy graduate Harry White also impressed, returning figures of 2-77 in a tough day in the field for the Derbyshire attack. It was, however, a positive day for Wainwright who bowled 11 overs in his return to action.
The other Northants wicket fell to the spin of Scott Elstone when Rob Newton was caught by Chesney Hughes off his bowling having scored 82 in a 218-run second-wicket partnership with Coetzer.
Northants eventually declared having scored a mammoth 448-6 inside 90 overs and gave Derbyshire 12 overs to bat from which the visitors scored 38-1 with Hughes 20 not out and Elstone unbeaten on 15.
