Godleman to lead county at Southport

Billy Godleman will lead the side this week at Southport as Graeme Welch names his 13-man squad that will face Lancashire in the LV= County Championship, starting on Sunday.

Godleman will Captain the side with Club Captain Wayne Madsen out for at four least weeks with a finger injury.

Pace bowler Tony Palladino returns to the squad after missing the last two LV= County Championship fixtures, but all-rounder Alex Hughes is absent with a thumb injury. Jonathan Clare also misses out through injury.

Derbyshire came agonisingly close to victory last time out against Northamptonshire, with the last Northants wicket proving elusive for a bowling attack who had worked tirelessly on a tense final day.

New Director of Cricket Ashley Giles has enjoyed a promising start to life at Lancashire in the LV= County Championship.

The former England player and coach has helped guide the red rose county to three wins out of five so far this season, including victory over Derbyshire in the reverse fixture at The 3aaa County Ground on the opening day of the 2015 season.

Pre-season promotion favourites Lancashire sit at the top of Division Two, ahead of Gloucestershire who inflicted their only defeat so far this campaign a fortnight ago.

South Africa duo Alviro Petersen and Ashwell Prince have both started the season in fine fettle while Australia pace bowler Peter Siddle has been in menacing form with the new ball.

James Faulkner has since replaced Siddle as an overseas signing, but he will not feature in this game.

Zimbabwe bowler Kyle Jarvis has been the stand-out performer however, taking a total of 30 wickets at a superb average of 19.53 including two five-wicket hauls.

  • Karl Krikken and Dominic Cork recorded Derbyshire’s highest ever eighth-wicket partnership of 198 in a four-day fixture against Lancashire at Old Trafford in July 1996.
    • Derbyshire were victorious despite Lancashire amassing 587-9 in their first innings, with Jason Gallian scoring a sensational 312
    • Krikken and Cork led the recovery as Derbyshire recovered from 253-7 to 473-8 declared.
    • Derbyshire chased down their victory target of 289 in two sessions with two wickets in hand, inspired by a century from Dean Jones and Cork, who smashed an unbeaten 34 from 16 balls to see his side home.
