Mayor of the City of Derby, Councillor Paul Pegg, members of the Derby City Council cabinet and Lord Lieutenant Willie Tucker were on hand to officially unveil the landmark set of giant stumps on the Pentagon Roundabout today.

The giant stumps, that measure six meters in height and weight over 1.8 tonnes, were manufactured by stainless steel specialists Briggs of Burton and were installed last Friday.

At the start of April, the Club launched its #WereBackingTheBid campaign for Derby to become a host city for the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2017. As part of the announcement, the Club unveiled their plans for the set of giant cricket stumps to be installed on the gateway to the city on the Pentagon Roundabout.

Over 60 local businesses have since thrown their support behind the project, each donating £500 towards the stumps and the Club’s bid.  The logo of each business that has pledged their support has been placed on a large plaque that is situated to the side of the stumps and in the entrance to The 3aaa Pavilion.

Derbyshire Chief Executive, Simon Storey said: “We are very grateful to all local businesses who have come forward and pledged their support for our exciting World Cup bid.

“The giant stumps demonstrates our commitment – together with our partners – to the City of Derby as a great place to live, work, enjoy sport and as a great destination for visitors from across the world.

“With the business community coming together to deliver the giant stumps, we will be in an exceptionally strong position to demonstrate that the whole City is behind the ICC Women’s World Cup when the opportunity to submit our bid arrives later this year.”

There’s still time to pledge your support and back the bid. Please contact Maxine Holtam on 01332 388 121 or email [email protected].
