Elite Performance Director Graeme Welch was left ruing a missed opportunity as Derbyshire Falcons suffered a three-run defeat against Northamptonshire Steelbacks in the NatWest T20 Blast at Chesterfield.
Having restricted Northants to 155-6, Derbyshire were set a revised 144 to win from 18 overs due to a rain interruption but they fell just short on 140-5.
Welch believes his side should have got over the line in the opening game of the Autoworld Volvo XC90 Chesterfield Festival of Cricket, in association with Chesterfield Borough Council.
“It was the Durham game all over again, we needed 43 runs off the last six overs. We should have won that quite easily,” said Welch.
“We could have bowled a little bit better than what we did at certain times but Wes Durston has come out and played well again and set up the game for us.
“We haven’t really been in a tight game this year, we’ve either won convincingly or lost convincingly, maybe it’s down to belief, maybe it’s down to trusting your judgment as a player.
“We can always have a look at certain things, we sent in players with the aim of knocking the runs off and its difficult sometimes to go in and strike the ball quickly in that situation.
“But in the situation we get ourselves in, we have should have won the game pretty easily, and we are very disappointed that we didn’t get over the line.
“It’s frustrating that we’ve lost two games now from positions when we really should have won the game comfortably.
“We need to bounce back quickly, starting with the LV=County Championship game against Glamorgan tomorrow.”
Derbyshire are back in action at Queen’s Park tomorrow, as they host Glamorgan for the start of a four-day fixture in the LV= County Championship.
