Ben Cotton says he’s delighted to sign a contract extension with Derbyshire, but insists there is still a lot of hard work ahead.

The Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby graduate has signed a new one-year contract extension, committing him to the Club until the end of the 2017.

Cotton appeared in 20 fixtures in 2015, claiming 32 wickets across all three formats and was the county’s joint-highest wicket-taker in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

“It’s really nice to sign a contract extension,” the 22-year-old said. “The Club have seen the effort I have put in this season and it is nice to be rewarded with the new deal.

“I have progressed in the shorter formats this season and enjoyed my role in the bowling attack.

“I was a little disappointed with my red-ball form, though. I didn’t quite bowl as well as I feel I can do but hopefully with a good winter of training I will improve that. I feel like I am always developing.

“Throughout the winter and over the course of the season I have worked hard with Graeme and the other coaches on technique and learning about the game.

“I’m already looking forward to the new season, but first there is a lot of hard work ahead over the winter. We are always trying to improve our skills and get better as players. Hopefully we will notice this in 2016.”

Cotton added: “The Club have brought in Neil Broom who will benefit the younger lads with his experience along with Hamish Rutherford who we are all happy to have back.

“They are two experienced players and it will be great to have them at the top of the order for the entire season.

“Andy Carter will be a boost for us as well. He’s a very well-known bowler in professional cricket and takes a lot of wickets. Hopefully myself and the other bowlers can tap into his knowledge and pick up a few pointers.”
