Squad return from successful Briggs of Burton Pre-Season Tour

The Derbyshire squad have arrived back from a successful Briggs of Burton Pre-Season Tour where they were victorious in all four fixtures in Abu Dhabi.

The Falcons enjoyed 10 days in the United Arab Emirates, which were a mix of competitive net sessions and valuable experience out in the middle. We take a look back at how Derbyshire got on in their four matches in Abu Dhabi.

Sunday 13 March: Twenty20 Fixture
Derbyshire vs Worcestershire/Warwickshire Combined XI

Shiv Thakor scored a brisk half-century to help Derbyshire begin the Briggs of Burton Pre-Season Tour to Abu Dhabi with victory versus a combined Worcestershire and Warwickshire XI.

Thakor top scored with 56 from 41 balls and he was ably assisted by Tom Knight who added 45 from 39 balls as Derbyshire posted 141-5 from their 20 overs.

A fine bowling performance then saw the Falcons ease to a 19-run win, with Tony Palladino returning 3-15, Tom Milnes taking 2-11 and Ben Cotton chipping in with 2-22.

Monday 14 March: 50-over Fixture
Derbyshire vs Worcestershire

Chesney Hughes hit an unbeaten 90 as Derbyshire completed a comfortable seven-wicket win over Worcestershire in Abu Dhabi.

After being asked to bowl first, Derbyshire made regular inroads into the Worcestershire line-up, eventually bowling them out for 183 with Matt Critchley the pick of the bowlers with 4-42.

In reply, the Falcons made light work of the target with Chesney Hughes top scoring with 90 not out from 82 deliveries and Wes Durston striking 42.

Derbyshire reached their target with over 18 overs remaining and seven wickets in hand.

Tuesday 15 March: 50-over Fixture
Derbyshire vs Danube Lions

Wes Durston top scored with 74 as Derbyshire made it three straight wins in Abu Dhabi with a 69-run victory versus local side Danube Lions.

Durston and Tom Milnes (48) put on the only century stand of the match to put Derbyshire into a commanding position before a 12-run penalty for a slow over rate meant that they set the Lions 293 to win.

Wayne Madsen (3-12) and Ben Cotton (3-43) took three wickets each as Derbyshire bowled Danube out for 223 to secure A 69-run win.

Wednesday 16 March: Twenty20 Fixture
Derbyshire vs Leicestershire

Tom Poynton hit 35 not out, including 16 off four balls in the final over, to help Derbyshire to a thrilling victory over Leicestershire to round off a successful Briggs of Burton Pre-Season Tour.

Poynton hit three fours and two sixes in his 18-ball innings to take the Falcons past their target of 137, having earlier restricted their opponents to 136-8 with Shiv Thakor (3-24) taking three wickets against his former county.

In their reply, Derbyshire had been left needing 48 runs for victory from little over four overs when Poynton came to the crease. With help from Tom Taylor (10 not out), Poynton was able to get his side over the line to maintain the Falcons’ perfect record and make it four wins from four in Abu Dhabi.
