Derbyshire begin tour with victory

Sunday 13th March 2016
Written by Danny Painter

Shiv Thakor scored a brisk half-century to help Derbyshire begin the Briggs of Burton Pre-Season Tour to Abu Dhabi with victory in a Twenty20 fixture versus a combined Worcestershire and Warwickshire XI.

Thakor top scored with 56 from 41 balls and he was ably assisted by Tom Knight who added 45 from 39 balls as Derbyshire posted 141-5 from their 20 overs.

A fine bowling performance then saw the Falcons ease to a 19-run win, with Tony Palladino returning 3-15, Tom Milnes taking 2-11 and Ben Cotton chipping in with 2-22.

Captain Wes Durston won the toss prior and chose to bat first on Nursery Pitch Two at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium complex in Abu Dhabi.

The Falcons were able to score 141-5 from their allotted overs, thanks largely to the efforts of Thakor and Knight. Thakor struck seven fours on his way to scoring 56, whilst Knight hit  three fours and a six in his 45, as the pair enjoyed a fruitful stand for the third wicket.

Graeme Welch’s men took wickets at regular intervals in their opponent’s reply to put the target of 142 out of reach.

The pace of Palladino, Milnes and Cotton proved too much for the Worcestershire and Warwickshire XI whilst Durston’s spin saw him claim one wicket.

Derbyshire are back in action on Monday 14 March when they face Worcestershire in a 50-over fixture.
