Falcons make it two wins from two in Abu Dhabi

Chesney Hughes hit an unbeaten 90 as Derbyshire completed a comfortable seven-wicket win over Worcestershire in a 50-over fixture in Abu Dhabi.

After being asked to bowl first, Derbyshire made regular inroads into the Worcestershire line-up, eventually bowling them out for 183 with Matt Critchley the pick of the bowlers with 4-42.

In reply, the Falcons made light work of the target with Chesney Hughes top scoring with 90 not out from 82 deliveries and Wes Durston striking 42.

Derbyshire reached their target with over 18 overs remaining and seven wickets in hand to make it two victories from two matches on the Briggs of Burton Pre-Season Tour.

Opening bowlers Andy Carter and Tom Taylor both took an early wicket after being asked to bowl first by Worcestershire at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

The good work of Derbyshire’s seamers continued as both Shiv Thakor (2-26) and Alex Hughes (2-25) took two wickets apiece during the middle overs to leave their opposition on 123-6 in the 27th over.

It was then left to the leg-spin of 19-year-old Critchley to finish off the Pears’ tail. He removed the final four Worcestershire batsmen to return 4-42 of his 10 overs and set Derbyshire a victory target of 184.

Despite the early loss of Ben Slater for six, Derbyshire made steady progress throughout their reply thanks to a good partnership between Durston and Chesney Hughes.

Durston fell for 42 but Chesney Hughes continued to bat well and reached his half-century with the score on 126-2 just before halfway stage, and only another 52 runs required for victory.

Shortly after, Wayne Madsen was caught out for 17 and was replaced by Alex Hughes who assisted Chesney Hughes in getting Derbyshire over the line.

Chesney and Alex Hughes were both not out on 90 and 21 respectively when Derbyshire reached 186-3 in the 32 over to seal a convincing seven-wicket win.
