Club legend Kim Barnett has been appointed as the President of Derbyshire County Cricket Club at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday 23 March.
The Supervisory Board unanimously supported the nomination of the former Captain, who was officially confirmed for the position, which carries a one-year term, at the Club’s AGM.
Barnett – one of the most decorated players in the Club’s history – made a total of 813 appearances for Derbyshire during a career that spanned 19 years, between 1979 and 1998.
He played a leading role in three title winning campaigns, claiming the NatWest Trophy with victory at Lord’s in 1981, and captaining the side to the Refuge Assurance Sunday League title in 1990 and to the Benson & Hedges Cup in 1993.
The opening batsman, who also featured in four Tests for England, played 398 first-class matches for Derbyshire, scoring 23,854 runs and compiling 53 hundreds – both a Club record.
He also holds Club records for most List A runs, with 12,358, and most List A hundreds, with 13, while he was also Derbyshire’s longest-serving Captain. In total, he scored over 44,000 runs across both formats during his career.
Barnett said: “I’m grateful to Chairman, Chris Grant, and the Supervisory Board for nominating me and I’m looking forward to my term in office. It is an honour and I am proud to be able to serve the county in this way.”
Barnett succeeds the outgoing President, Geoff Miller.
Chairman, Chris Grant added: “Geoff has been a great ambassador for the Club during his two terms as President and we are very grateful to him for his support in spreading the message across the county.
“We’re delighted that Kim has accepted to be our next President. His record for Derbyshire is second to none and he is widely regarded as our greatest ever player. We are looking forward to working with Kim during his term of office.”
