Graeme Welch has backed Billy Godleman for success as the county’s new four-day Captain following his appointment earlier this week.

Godleman takes over from Wayne Madsen who made the decision to step down after he had recently signed a new three-year deal to keep him at the Club until the end of the 2019 season.

Welch has paid tribute to Madsen and insists the move will only help his game as he continues to strive for honours with England.

“Wayne’s been a great captain and he’s still got ambitions to play for England,” said Welch. “I still believe he is one of the best players in the country and I think he is good enough to play for England.

“He is still a great ambassador for this Club and still one of our main men, but he just wants to move back into the ranks and help the younger lads that way. He just sees himself in a bit of a different role at this time.

“The way Billy has improved as an individual and how he is comfortable with his game now makes him the right man for the job.

“He was always a leader within the team anyway, while always being very respectful and not overstepping the mark.

“Billy has grown over the last few years and he enjoyed the extra responsibility when he was captain for a couple of games last year. The lads followed his leadership when he took over and I’m sure he will do well as Captain.

“Wayne did a great job for us but this is perhaps the next level we go to.”
