Durham MCCU three down after rain-affected day

Tuesday 12th April 2016
Written by Danny Painter

Durham MCCU ended Day Two of the three-day fixture on 96-3 after heavy overnight rain wiped out the first two sessions of the day at The 3aaa County Ground.

The umpires conducted inspections throughout the morning and early afternoon before concluding that play could begin at 4pm with two-and-a-half hours remaining in the day.

In the 39 overs that were bowled, the visitors, led by county batsmen Cameron Steel (34) and Jack Clark (34), finished the day on 96-3, trailing by 300 runs, with Tony Palladino (2-18) picking up two wickets.

After the lengthy rain delay, Graeme Welch’s men got the early breakthrough their disciplined bowling deserved when Palladino bowled opening batsmen James McCollum for 11.

That brought Steel to the wicket to join Clark and the pair set about creating a partnership worth 63 during some more tight bowling from the hosts’ seamers.

Currently part of Middlesex’s development squad, 20-year-old Steel played a defiant innings for his 34 but was eventually deemed lbw to the bowling of Shiv Thakor having faced 66 deliveries.

Opener Clark, part of Durham’s Second XI, faced 99 balls before he was the second batsman to fall to Palladino, edging the 32-year-old to Chesney Hughes at first slip on 34.

At the close of play, Durham MCCU were 96-3, trailing by 300 runs, having faced 39 overs. Play is due to resume at 11am tomorrow and entry is FREE.
